Advancing Renewable Energy for Sustainable Farming

An international workshop on renewable energy applications for modern sustainable agriculture was held at Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR). Organized by the Department of Energy Systems Engineering, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering & Technology, the event brought together national and international experts, faculty, researchers and students to examine practical pathways for integrating renewable energy into Pakistan’s farming systems.

Prof. Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman, Vice Chancellor PMAS-AAUR, presided over the session and thanked the Chief Guest while reiterating the university’s commitment to research-driven innovation. He noted that PMAS-AAUR has consistently worked at the forefront of addressing contemporary agricultural challenges through technology, sustainability and international collaboration, and stressed the mission to develop a new generation of professionals capable of transforming Pakistan’s agriculture through renewable energy and smart farming solutions.

Ms Yasmin Paracha, Director of DAAD Islamabad, attended as Chief Guest and praised the university’s proactive approach to renewable energy education and research. She emphasized the need to strengthen international academic linkages and capacity-building initiatives to equip young engineers and scientists with practical knowledge, and stressed that transitioning to clean and renewable energy is an agricultural imperative where sustainable food production depends on effective integration of renewable technologies into farming systems.

Presentations from national and international speakers covered topics such as solar-powered irrigation, biogas and biomass utilization, energy-efficient greenhouse systems and smart energy management in precision agriculture. Speakers highlighted the vital connection between renewable energy and food security, arguing that innovative, cost-effective energy solutions are essential for rural development and improved agricultural productivity in Pakistan.

The Vice Chancellor presented shields and souvenirs to the Chief Guest and distinguished speakers in recognition of their contributions. The workshop was attended by Deans, Directors, faculty members, researchers and a large number of students, reflecting strong institutional interest in applying renewable energy to strengthen climate resilience and practical learning through international collaboration.
