Islamabad Transport Authority Launches High-Tech Crackdown on Vehicular Pollution, Begins CO Emission Monitoring
Carbon Monoxide Testing in Islamabad Transport Authority

Islamabad:
ISLAMABAD: In a major step toward curbing urban air pollution, the Islamabad Transport Authority (ITA) has launched a high-tech initiative to monitor and regulate vehicles emitting excessive smoke, with a particular focus on carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. The program, led by ITA Chairman Irfan Nawaz Memon, leverages modern detection technology to enforce environmental standards and ensure cleaner air for the city’s residents.
The Authority has begun testing state-of-the-art instruments designed to accurately measure CO levels in vehicle exhausts. During a recent review of the equipment, Chairman Memon emphasized the importance of using innovative tools to strengthen environmental enforcement.
According to the Secretary of the Transport Authority, these advanced devices will empower inspectors to measure emissions with precision, ensuring that vehicles remain within permissible limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which currently caps carbon monoxide emissions at 6%.
Vehicles found exceeding the CO limit will be issued a grace period to address the issue. However, if emissions remain above the threshold beyond the grace period, violators will face penalties, permit suspension, or sticker revocation. Only vehicles that meet the regulatory requirements will be issued valid permits and stickers, making them roadworthy under the new system.
Initially, the inspection drive will target government vehicles, serving as a model for broader implementation. The Authority intends to gradually extend the inspections to cover all public and private vehicles in the region.
Chairman Memon affirmed that the ITA is committed to technological innovation in addressing environmental challenges. “This initiative reflects our resolve to ensure urban air quality through science-backed enforcement,” he said.
This campaign is a collaborative effort between the Islamabad Transport Authority and environmental agencies, aimed at drastically reducing vehicular emissions, which are a primary contributor to air pollution in the capital.
