Pakistan Army Elevates Combat Power with Z-10ME Helicopter

The Pakistan Army has strengthened its aviation fleet with the induction of the advanced Z-10ME attack helicopter, signaling a major boost in its combat readiness and modernization. The cutting-edge aircraft, supplied by China, is equipped with sophisticated systems and armaments that significantly enhance its operational effectiveness across a range of mission profiles.
Developed as an export version of the Chinese Z-10 and upgraded after extensive trials by Pakistan Army Aviation, the Z-10ME is regarded as a direct competitor to the US-made Apache helicopter. Featuring improvements in radar, weaponry, and electronic systems, its design incorporates an upgraded cannon with a new mounting position for better balance, as well as six external hardpoints that can carry up to three tons of air-to-ground and air-to-air weaponry.
One of the helicopter’s most notable features is its enhanced arsenal, including the CM501XA miniature cruise missile. This missile is capable of both reconnaissance and strike missions, aided by an X-band radar for precise movement tracking and a data link for real-time engagement of high-value or time-sensitive enemy targets. The Z-10ME also integrates the SW-6 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), a compact drone deployable directly from the helicopter. This UAV enhances surveillance and autonomous mission capabilities, with a payload capacity of five kilograms and up to one hour of flight at cruising speeds.
In addition to land-based combat, the Z-10ME extends its reach to maritime operations with the ET60 “Fish Fight” lightweight torpedo. This anti-submarine weapon has a range of 25 kilometers and can travel at 50 kilometers per hour, broadening the helicopter’s tactical portfolio.
Further expanding its offensive options, the Z-10ME is compatible with a range of advanced munitions, such as the TY-90 air-to-air missile, the CM-502AG air-to-ground missile, and the VX Fire-and-Forget missile, which is similar in capability to the American Hellfire AGL-114L. It also supports both guided and unguided missile systems, offering dynamic firepower suited to modern battlefield demands.
A significant upgrade in the Z-10ME is its WZ-9 engine, delivering 30 percent more power compared to its predecessor. This increase in output, up to 1,300 kilowatts, enhances the helicopter’s flight performance and payload capacity, especially in challenging high-altitude and high-temperature environments. Additional design improvements, such as a more efficient centrifugal sand filter and enlarged air intakes, ensure reliable operation in dusty or desert settings. The exhaust system has been redesigned to face upward, lowering the helicopter’s infrared signature and decreasing its susceptibility to enemy heat-seeking missiles.
With these advanced features, the Z-10ME provides the Pakistan Army with a versatile and formidable weapon, advancing its combat capabilities and placing its aviation wing at the forefront of regional military aviation technology.
