Driving Sustainable Maritime Action in Pakistan
NIMA marked World Maritime Day with a seminar under the theme Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunities, bringing together experts and stakeholders to push Sustainable Maritime priorities for Pakistan. The event highlighted how climate impacts, pollution and fisheries management intersect with national development and the blue economy.
Commander Anees Khan (Retd) opened the session, followed by focused presentations from specialists including Dr. Kanwar Javed Iqbal on sustainable fisheries, Dr. Fasiha Safdar on climate change and rising seas, Ms. Neelam Pari on marine pollution, and Ms. Maham Nadeem Malik on youth engagement. Speakers examined practical steps to safeguard marine resources while unlocking economic opportunities for coastal communities.
Chief Guest Mr. Rab Nawaz, Senior Director WWF-Pakistan, emphasized the need for collective action across government, industry and civil society to address threats to the ocean and to realise the benefits of a sustainable blue economy. Commodore Raheel Masood SI(M) (Retd), Director Projects NIMA, reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable maritime development and to integrating resilience measures into planning and projects.
Participants underlined that a coordinated push on policy, pollution control, sustainable fisheries and youth engagement is essential to translate commitments into results. Continued dialogue and collaboration were presented as critical to turn the seminar’s recommendations into tangible outcomes for Pakistan’s coastal environment and maritime future.
