CPNE Calls for Action to Defend Press Freedom
The Islamabad–Rawalpindi Committee of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors voiced deep concern over the shrinking space for free expression after a meeting chaired by Committee Chairman Yahya Sadozai. Members warned that recent measures, especially actions taken under the PECA Act, are eroding the environment for press freedom and placing undue pressure on print journalists and publications.
Participants stressed that print media has historically acted as a responsible pillar of journalism and has consistently supported the state on national and diplomatic fronts. Despite this record, print outlets are increasingly being treated the same as platforms accused of irresponsible conduct, a trend the committee said risks undermining the government’s own communications and trust with the public.
Speakers noted it is rare for a print journalist to publish material that harms the state, yet the escalation of restrictions and legal measures has weakened avenues for legitimate reporting and commentary. The committee also observed that many policymakers who now support stricter controls had earlier criticized such laws while in opposition, underscoring the need for a principled approach to press freedom rather than short term political advantage.
Members agreed that statements alone are insufficient and called on CPNE to mount an effective and comprehensive strategy to safeguard media rights. The committee recommended organising seminars and conferences, engaging with policy makers on official platforms, and ensuring strong CPNE representation during regulatory discussions to preserve press freedom and fair operating conditions for print media.
The meeting welcomed the restoration of the Audit Bureau of Circulation and urged regular review of ABC matters, registration processes and ITNE so that concerns of media organisations can be addressed promptly and transparently. In closing, prayers were offered for the late Aamir Mehmood and other deceased CPNE members, and their contributions to defending press freedom were remembered with respect.
