Tackling Organized Crime in Karachi Today
On 19 November 2025, UNODC convened a one-day conference at the Sindh Police Museum in Karachi to advance the National Strategy against organized crime. The meeting brought together civil society, academia, the business community, media and law enforcement agencies to focus on threats specific to Pakistan’s largest megapolis.
Building on momentum from Lahore, the Karachi round examined major manifestations of organized crime affecting urban life, including extortion, land grabbing, street crime, vehicle lifting, drug trafficking, cyber-enabled crimes and water theft. Participants noted how these activities are often interconnected and damage public safety, property rights and economic confidence across Sindh.
Speakers at the conference urged joined-up action and stronger institutional coordination across provincial and national bodies, advocating improved information sharing, joint investigations and preventive measures. Emphasis was placed on meaningful inclusion of wider communities, with a particular focus on empowering women and youth to take part in shaping local responses to organized crime.
Delegates stressed that rebuilding trust between citizens and institutions is key to creating safer neighbourhoods and more resilient urban systems. The initiative aims to translate dialogue into concrete steps that strengthen law enforcement capacity while safeguarding rights and livelihoods.
Stakeholders agreed to sustain cross-sector collaboration so the National Strategy against organized crime responds to Karachi’s unique challenges and contributes to lasting stability across Sindh and beyond.
