Pakistan Population Growth and Its Impact on the Future

Pakistan’s population has surpassed 241 million, with projections indicating it could exceed 400 million by 2050—a trend that poses significant challenges for the country’s future. The majority of the population, 64 percent, is currently under 30 years old, highlighting both a potential demographic advantage and a pressing need for careful planning.

Experts and government officials stress that addressing rapid population growth requires wise policymaking, targeted investment, and coordinated action. In response, the Ministry of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Pakistan, has launched a national workshop on the “Strategic Population and Development Framework.” The workshop aims to integrate population trends into national planning, align policy priorities between national and provincial needs, and develop practical strategies.

Federal Minister for Planning Professor Ahsan Iqbal addressed the opening of the workshop, warning that uncontrolled population growth would intensify pressure on already strained resources such as education, healthcare, food, water, housing, energy, jobs, and infrastructure. He underscored that effectively managing population growth is essential for the country’s survival and long-term prosperity.

Professor Iqbal added that Pakistan’s large youth population could either become its greatest strength or its biggest challenge. Under the Population and Development Strategic Framework, the government aims to empower youth by providing quality education, decent employment opportunities, and accessible healthcare, enabling every citizen to play a constructive role in the economy and society.

The government has committed to translating the outcomes of these consultations into actionable frameworks, ensuring goals of inclusive and sustainable development are met. Officials emphasized that this process is about more than figures—it’s about building a future of opportunity, where every Pakistani can contribute positively to national progress.
