TAC Meeting Highlights GM Crop Biosafety Decisions

The 40th meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) was convened under the leadership of the Director General, bringing together committee members and key stakeholders to foster collaboration on important biosafety issues. The session focused on strengthening regulatory decision-making and highlighted the significance of collective efforts in managing biosafety challenges.
Among the primary topics discussed were the evaluation of applications for importing genetically modified (GM) canola and GM soybean meal for use in food, feed, and processing. The committee also reviewed a proposal for a field trial involving GM cotton and considered the import of GM soybean grain. Each case was thoroughly examined to assess compliance with biosafety standards.
After in-depth discussions, the TAC agreed to submit its recommendations to the forthcoming National Biosafety Committee (NBC) meeting. These deliberations underscore Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to advancing agricultural biotechnology in a responsible manner while maintaining robust biosafety measures.
