KOICA Pakistan Steps Up Water and Healthcare
On 17 September 2025 the KOICA Pakistan team carried out a monitoring visit to Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as part of the project Supporting Afghan Refugees and Their Host Communities in Pakistan (2022–2025, USD 5.65M) to review progress in water, sanitation and healthcare interventions.
The delegation inspected three solar-powered water supply schemes serving Baghbanan refugee village and Badaber camp to assess operations and hear directly from users. Residents welcomed the improvements, saying that access to clean water at home has dramatically reduced the risks women and children faced when fetching water from distant sources.
The team also visited Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar’s largest public medical facility, to review the solar installation on the rooftop of the Accident & Emergency unit. The system now supports uninterrupted emergency procedures and treatment by stabilizing power supply during outages.
KTH officials and medical staff expressed appreciation for the upgrade, noting that a reliable power source has markedly improved conditions in the emergency room. Mr. Kofi Ohenenana Dwomo, Head of UNHCR Peshawar Sub-office, also thanked the project team and highlighted how KOICA Pakistan’s support has strengthened healthcare delivery for both refugees and host community patients.
KOICA Pakistan says it will continue efforts to improve water accessibility and build a more resilient healthcare system in refugee-hosting areas, reinforcing local services and supporting community wellbeing across Peshawar and surrounding districts.
