“Pakistan’s Test Batting Crisis: Lowest Second-Innings Average Among Top Teams

Pakistan’s batting struggles in Test cricket are a long-standing concern, with the team often relying on its exceptional fast-bowling arsenal to remain competitive. However, recent statistics have exposed an even more alarming trend, specifically in Pakistan’s second innings performances, where their batting weaknesses are starkly evident.

Since 2023, Pakistan’s second innings batting average has plummeted to a dismal 17.03, the lowest among the top nine Test-playing nations. In seven matches, they have only managed to score four fifties and a single century in the second innings. This worrying statistic highlights Pakistan’s inability to handle pressure during crucial phases of a Test match, particularly in the latter stages.

In contrast, other teams have fared significantly better in their second innings. Sri Lanka tops the chart with an impressive second-innings team average of 31.11, followed closely by New Zealand and India, whose averages are also in the 30s. Surprisingly, Bangladesh outshines England in this regard, boasting an average of 28.58 compared to England’s 28.19. Even the West Indies, who have struggled in Test cricket recently, manage a second-innings average of 17.44, slightly better than Pakistan.

The declining form of Pakistan’s batting in the second innings is a critical issue that demands immediate attention. If this trend continues, the team may struggle to compete against stronger sides in the Test arena, making it harder to secure victories and climb the rankings.

Team Matches Average 100s 50s
Sri Lanka 11 31.11 5 17
New Zealand 12 30.76 4 21
India 12 30.45 4 9
Bangladesh 10 28.56 3 11
England 17 28.19 5 17
Australia 17 26.62 1 19
South Africa 8 23.75 3 4
West Indies 12 17.44 0 6
Pakistan 7 17.03 1 4
