CPDI Urges Punjab Governor to Strengthen RTI Commission and Enact Journalist Safety Law
LAHORE – The Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives (CPDI) has called on Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan to take urgent steps for strengthening the province’s Right to Information (RTI) Commission and introducing legislation for the safety of journalists.
In a meeting led by Moonus Kayinat Zahra, Project Manager at CPDI, the delegation highlighted that the Punjab RTI Commission remains under-resourced and continues to operate with a vacant Information Commissioner’s seat. The delegation stressed that without immediate government action to fill these gaps, the Commission’s ability to ensure transparency and public access to information will remain compromised.
The CPDI team also urged the Governor to support the passage and enforcement of a journalist safety law in Punjab, noting that Sindh and the federal government have already taken legislative steps in this regard. They pointed out that journalists in Punjab face mounting threats, particularly in the wake of the PECA 2025 amendments, which have heightened risks for media workers.
Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan acknowledged the concerns raised, assured the delegation of his commitment to initiating measures in this direction, and praised CPDI’s continued efforts for promoting transparency, accountability, and the protection of journalists.
