Advancing Biosafety Training Across Egypt
The World Health Organization office in Egypt, together with the Ministry of Health and Population and supported by the Pandemic Fund, held a focused four-day workshop to raise the standard of biosafety practice in public health laboratories.
More than 70 biosafety officers and occupational health specialists from public health laboratories representing 26 governorates attended practical and technical sessions designed to strengthen everyday laboratory safety. Trainers delivered comprehensive modules on operational biosafety, risk management and workplace protection to ensure staff and community safety.
This event builds on an initiative launched in October 2023 to promote biosafety and biosecurity measures across Egypt’s public health laboratory network. By introducing structured biosafety training at the occupational health level, organisers aimed to create consistent national practices and improve laboratory resilience.
The collaboration highlights a shared commitment from WHO Egypt and the Ministry of Health and Population to enhance laboratory capacity as a critical part of Egypt’s health system. Continued investment and targeted training through the Pandemic Fund support will help embed stronger biosafety standards across provinces.
Strengthened biosafety training helps protect laboratory workers and supports faster, safer testing during routine work and public health events. Such capacity building in Egypt also contributes to regional health security by ensuring reliable, safe laboratory operations across the public health network.
