Advancing NDMA collaboration with Chinese researchers
A delegation from the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), led by Prof. Xu Wenqiang and Prof. Hong Tianhua, Executive Director of the CPJRC, visited the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) at the National Disaster Management Authority to explore avenues for scientific partnership and applied research.
The visiting team received a detailed briefing on NEOC capabilities and NDMA’s operational framework, followed by an in-house meeting with Mr. Tanveer Piracha, Executive Director of the National Institute of Disaster Management. Discussions focused on potential joint projects that could strengthen early warning systems and improve multi-hazard responses across Pakistan.
Delegates were updated on NIDM’s ongoing research, multi-hazard risk assessments, climate resilience initiatives and nationwide capacity-building programs. Emphasis was placed on practical collaboration that supports local institutions and communities, reinforcing the goals of NDMA collaboration to translate scientific findings into operational preparedness.
Both sides highlighted the importance of regional scientific cooperation, data sharing and joint research on climate change, drought dynamics and ecosystem resilience as central pillars of disaster risk reduction. Prof. Hong Tianhua commended NDMA’s evidence-based approach and expressed keen interest in long-term academic partnerships, student exchange opportunities and collaborative modelling initiatives.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences also acknowledged the timeliness of NDMA’s DEWTEC 2025 initiative, underscoring shared priorities in advancing climate-resilient planning. Participants agreed to pursue concrete steps toward research exchanges, technical collaboration and capacity enhancement to benefit Pakistan’s disaster resilience architecture.
