Islamabad Unveils Gagarin Monument at F9 Park
A bust of Yuri Gagarin was unveiled in Islamabad’s F-9 Fatima Jinnah Park, offering a visible symbol of cultural and scientific ties between Russia and Pakistan. The Gagarin monument was revealed in a ceremony attended by Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev, Pakistani Power Minister Awais Leghari, Russian Ambassador Albert P. Khorev, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Russia Faisal Niaz Tirmizi and pilot-cosmonaut, Hero of Russia Elena Serova.
“This is the greatest feat in our shared history. A huge number of scientists are engaged in space research. Let this work benefit all countries of the world,” said Sergei Tsivilev during the event. He also announced that next year Islamabad will host a Russia-Pakistan conference focused on the development of cosmonautics and space infrastructure, underscoring the role the Gagarin monument plays in promoting space cooperation.
The opening was timed to coincide with the 10th meeting of the Russia-Pakistan Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation, reinforcing the ceremonial unveiling’s connection to broader bilateral collaboration. The organisers expressed gratitude to the International Charitable Fund Dialogue of Cultures – United World for providing the bust and to the St. Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange for support in installing the monument, as well as to Pakistani authorities for their assistance.
The Gagarin monument adds a new cultural landmark in Islamabad and signals a willingness to deepen scientific dialogue. Officials said the planned conference and continued engagement on space infrastructure could create opportunities for researchers and institutions in Pakistan to engage more closely with Russian partners.
