Winter Relief Drive Reaches Islamabad Workers
Late into a cold Islamabad night, volunteers from Zakat Foundation of America Pakistan distributed quilts and basic bedding to homeless labourers and daily wage workers along Peshawar Morr, Murree Road and adjoining routes connecting Islamabad with Rawalpindi. With temperatures dipping to nearly 4°C, the winter relief effort targeted those forced to sleep outdoors due to lack of shelter.
Student volunteers from several universities were assigned specific routes and briefed on ethical engagement so aid could be delivered respectfully and without disturbing people at rest. Teams worked through the night to provide timely, dignified assistance to workers who often remain mobile because of their jobs.
The night-time distribution is part of a broader seasonal programme aimed at protecting vulnerable communities from cold-related illnesses. While government-run shelters offer some relief, many labourers are unable to access these facilities because of work schedules, mobility challenges or distance, making community-level outreach critical.
Organisers say the winter relief drive will continue in other cities as part of a nationwide outreach during the cold season, complementing public efforts with community-based initiatives focused on emergency relief, education, orphan care and youth development. The emphasis on respectful engagement and targeted late-night routes is intended to reach those most at risk along Islamabad’s roads.
