Journalists Demand Action After Attack on Ihsan Khattak

Unidentified gunmen opened fire at the residence of senior journalist Ihsan Khattak in Bannu late last night, striking the main gate. No casualties were reported, but the attack has heightened concerns across the local media community and prompted calls for immediate protection for journalists.

Ihsan Khattak, who works for a private television channel, said the assailants fired at his house while suspicious motorcyclists had been following him for several weeks during travel to and from the press club and on reporting assignments. He told police he has no personal enmity with anyone and has filed an application at the concerned police station to document the threats.

The local police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. SHO Allah Nawaz Khan said journalists serve as a vital link between the public and government and assured that law enforcement would provide full cooperation and protection while pursuing legal action against those responsible.

The Bannu Press Club strongly condemned the attack and demanded a transparent and speedy inquiry to hold perpetrators accountable and safeguard media workers. At an emergency meeting chaired by Peer Niaz Ali Shah, Ihsan Khattak briefed colleagues on the incident and journalists present expressed full solidarity and support for him as they reiterated their commitment to reporting despite threats.

Journalistic organisations and members of civil society urged the government and relevant authorities to strengthen measures that ensure the safety of reporters so they can carry out their duties without fear. The call for protection and a thorough probe into the attack on Ihsan Khattak reflects broader concerns over the security of media professionals in the region.
