Hafeez Criticises 1990s Pakistan Stars for ICC Trophy Shortcomings

Former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez has questioned the legacy of the country’s cricketing greats from the 1990s, highlighting their inability to secure an ICC trophy despite their dominance in international cricket.
Speaking in a discussion alongside Shoaib Akhtar, Shoaib Malik, and Sana Mir, Hafeez acknowledged the exceptional talent of that era but pointed out that Pakistan fell short in major tournaments.
He noted that the team participated in the 1996, 1999, and 2003 World Cups, reaching the final only once in 1999, where they suffered a heavy defeat.

Reflecting on the years that followed, Hafeez described a challenging period for Pakistan cricket, including a setback in the 2007 T20 World Cup final.
However, he credited Younis Khan for leading the team to victory in the 2009 T20 World Cup, a win that, he believed, helped inspire future generations.
He also mentioned the 2017 Champions Trophy triumph as a key moment, suggesting that although Babar Azam had a limited role in that tournament, his presence contributed to the team’s evolving mindset.
The conversation took a lighter turn when Shoaib Akhtar recalled Pakistan’s dominance over India in ODIs, attributing the team’s 73 victories against their arch-rivals to his playing era.
