Thailand and Pakistan Launch SEP Model Village Pilot
From 23 to 25 September 2025 the Royal Thai Embassy in Islamabad organised a pilot project in Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to introduce the principles of the Sufficiency Economy to local farmers and officials. The three-day initiative brought Thai expertise to rural Pakistan with the aim of establishing a model village that demonstrates practical paths to self-reliance and stable livelihoods.
Experts from Thailand’s Department of Community Development, Department of Agriculture and Royal Irrigation Department conveyed Royal Initiatives of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej through hands-on training and technical guidance. The programme emphasised integrated management of land, water and community resources so that local practices align with the core ideas of the Sufficiency Economy while respecting local conditions in Haripur.
Training sessions covered New Theory Agriculture and integrated farming practices designed for mixed cropping and livestock integration, organic agriculture techniques and methods for value addition to farm produce, and practical approaches to water management and land use planning. Participants were encouraged to adapt these approaches to their own holdings and market opportunities to increase income resilience.
Workshops focused on community-led problem solving, with farmers and officials jointly analysing local challenges and co-designing actionable, localized solutions. The project promoted the principle of development from within, encouraging communities to build on existing skills and resources while adopting incremental improvements recommended by Thai specialists.
Organisers said the pilot aims to improve quality of life in participating communities by helping households achieve greater stability and self-sufficiency through the Sufficiency Economy approach. If scaled, the SEP model village concept could offer a replicable framework for sustainable rural development in other districts of Pakistan, showcasing practical cooperation between Thailand and Pakistani partners on community empowerment.
