PPP Moves to Support Foreign Medical Graduates
Senator Bilal Ahmed Khan has voiced firm backing for Foreign Medical Graduates following a detailed meeting with Dr. Rafey Sher and his delegation. The session, also attended by Senator Nadeem Ahmed Bhutto, reinforced PPP’s growing role as a political ally for doctors who obtained their qualifications abroad and are seeking a fair path to practice in Pakistan.
In a video message issued after the meeting, the senator criticized current Pakistan Medical and Dental Council practices that he said leave many competent young doctors in limbo. He argued that while unqualified practitioners continue to operate, qualified holders of legitimate foreign degrees face bureaucratic hurdles that prevent them from contributing to the national health system.
Senator Bilal called for urgent regulatory reform so Foreign Medical Graduates can be assessed and integrated without unnecessary delay. He urged authorities to introduce transparent procedures that prioritise patient safety while recognising internationally accredited qualifications, allowing qualified doctors to serve in underserved areas across the country.
Dr. Rafey Sher welcomed the PPP statements and praised party leaders for taking a principled stance in favour of young medical professionals. He urged broader political consensus, calling on all major parties and institutions to collaborate on resolving PMDC policy issues that affect thousands of Pakistani doctors trained abroad.
The FMG community expressed guarded optimism that renewed political engagement and sustained dialogue will lead to policy clarity, fairness and justice. Stakeholders say constructive legislative and institutional moves from the PPP and other parties could help unlock the potential of skilled overseas-trained doctors for Pakistan’s healthcare sector.
